ANTI-INFLAMMATORY (Non Steroid)
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, usually abbreviated to NSAIDs, are drugs with analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects. They reduce pain, fever and inflammation. The term "non-steroidal" is used to distinguish these drugs from steroids, which, among a broad range of other effects, have a similar eicosanoid-depressing, anti-inflammatory action. NSAIDs are sometimes also referred to as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents/analgesics (NSAIAs). Part of the popularity of NSAIDs is that, unlike opioids, they do not produce sedation or respiratory depression and have a very low addiction rate. NSAIDs are unique in that they are non-narcotic.
Sulindac (brand name CLINORIL®) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug of the arylalkanoic acid. It is useful in the treatment of acute or chronic inflammatory conditions. Sulindac is derived from sulfinylindene that is converted in the body to an active NSAID. More specifically, the agent is converted by liver enzymes to a sulfide which is excreted in the bile and then reabsorbed from the intestine. This is thought to help maintain constant blood levels with reduced gastrointestinal side effects. Some studies have shown sulindac to be less irritating to the stomach than other products, except for drugs of the COX-2 inhibitor class.
Inflammation is the first response of the immune system to infection or irritation and may be referred to as the innate cascade. Inflammation is characterized by the following quintet: redness, swelling, pain, heat, and dysfunction of the organs involved.
