ANTIVIRAL

Antiviral drugs are used for treating viral infections. Like antibiotics, specific antiviral drugs are required in the treatment against specific viruses. Antiviral drugs are generally well tolerated by patients and therefore are favored in the treatment of infections. Antivirals should be distinguished from viricides, which are generally used outside the body.

There are two categories of antivirals: antiretroviral drugs, which comprise a class of drug used against the HIV retrovirus, and neuraminidase inhibitors, which are used primarily against influenza virus A and B.

Acyclovir (brand name ZOVIRAX^®) is an antiviral drug used most commonly for the treatment of herpes simplex virus, chicken pox and shingles. It is one of the most commonly used antiviral drugs because it is extremely selective and low in cytotoxicity. Acyclovir was the start of a new era in antiviral therapy.
