Hypertension or high blood pressure occurs when the pressure of the blood flowing through the arteries is too high.¹ High pressure increases significantly the stress on vital organs such as the heart, the blood vessels and the kidneys.² The increased pressure, if left untreated, can lead to kidney failure, stroke, aneurisms, eye problems, coronary or heart failure.

A "coronary" or heart attack occurs when blood flow to a part of the heart is interrupted by a clot resulting from fat, cholesterol, or other substances in the arteries that supply the heart called plaque. If the plaque breaks and blood cloths develop, it may block the flow of blood to a part of the heart causing a heart attack or the brain causing a stroke. In the absence of blood that supplies oxygen, tissue begins to die often resulting in irreversible damage to the heart or brain.

Heart failure occurs when the pumping action of the heart is inadequate and the body is starved for oxygen. Heart failure may develop progressively and unnoticed over many years until a major cardiac event occurs. It is the leading cause of death related to cardiovascular events.

Atlas Pharma offers two products known as beta-blockers that are used for the treatment of hypertension and post heart attack therapy.

Carvedilol (brand name Coreg^®) is an alpha-blocker and nonselective beta-blocker used in the treatment of high blood pressure and heart failure. It is also used after a heart attack and has been demonstrated to improve survival. Carvedilol may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by the attending physician.

Captopril (brand name Capoten^®) is an Angiotensin Converting Enzyme inhibitor (ACE inhibitor) used for the treatment of hypertension and some types of congestive heart failure. Captopril was the first ACE inhibitor developed and was a breakthrough, both because of its novel mechanism of action and because of the revolutionary development process.
